About Goethe-Zertifikat A1

What it is: The Goethe-Institut's German certificate at level A1.
Level: A1Beginner. You can introduce yourself and handle very simple everyday phrases.
Who needs it: Adults who need proof of basic German. Spouse or family visa: usually A1 German before joining a spouse in Germany. Some applicants are exempt (for example spouses of Blue Card or skilled-worker holders, some nationalities, university degree holders). Check with the German mission that issues the visa.
Who runs it: Goethe-Institut and its licensed partner centres
Format: Reading 25 min, listening about 20 min, writing 20 min, speaking about 15 min in a group. Pass mark 60 of 100 points, and you must take every part. A retake covers the whole exam.
How to register: Through the Goethe-Institut webshop of this centre. Booking opens on the date shown and closes at the deadline shown.
Seats: Goethe does not publish seat counts.
Results: Your Goethe centre tells you when results are published. The certificate has no expiry date. The receiving office may ask for a recent one.
Study time: Typical guidance: 80 to 200 lessons of 45 minutes (Goethe).
